Come hungry to the University of Maryland this fall, because Dining Services is welcoming students back with new staff favorites from around the world: shrimp curry and arroz con frijoles. Korean barbeque burgers. Tandoori grilled meats and veggies.

That’s not the only way Dining Services is innovating. From expanded online ordering options to app notifications about specials and new lunch spot options across campus, check out what’s fresh this fall.

UMD’s 12th Café Opens
Tawes Hall is now home to Creative Commons, featuring Starbucks coffee and espresso beverages, sandwiches and salads, and Maryland bakery desserts. More than 100 comfy seats will be installed across from the café for Terps to eat, chat and relax in. Specials will be added to the menu once everything is running smoothly.

Stamp Restaurant Shuffle
Panera opened to big crowds at the end of the spring semester in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union, so the summer has been a good chance for the staff to turn the operation into a well-oiled machine. In addition, its back dining room will soon be available for bookings, giving campus community members a new spot to gather with colleagues and friends.

Other spots in Stamp will look a little different too: Subway is moving upstairs to the former Saladworks space in the food court this fall, freeing up additional space in TerpZone for games. Chik-fil-A will take over the former Roy Rogers space across from its busy current location in the spring, doubling its kitchen space.

Both will use the new Grubhub ordering system—familiar to anyone who’s used the kiosks at Panera—that will cut down lines and speed up the process for customers, said Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications Bart Hipple. Grubhub ordering is also available at all locations that serve Starbucks coffee across campus, as well as North and South Campus markets, and maybe introduced to more Stamp food court restaurants.

Dining Hall Specials—Right on Your Phone
Eager to know when and where doughboys will be offered for breakfast or birria tacos for lunch? Download the University of Maryland app, where Dining Services is announcing its specials. Just enable push notifications, and you’ll be the first to know what UMD’s chefs are serving up daily.

Expanded Market Hours
Offering pizza, burgers, the ever-popular chicken tenders and more, the North Campus and South Campus markets will now be open until midnight each day. The grill stations were extremely popular last year, spurring the push for later hours.

The Return of Recipes from Home, Purple Zone Recognition
After a lull in the Recipes from Home program, Dining Services will send postcards this year to the homes of resident students, asking their families to send in favorite recipes for consideration to be prepared in the dining halls.

“It’s such a great feature—we missed it last year,” said Hipple.

Elsewhere in the dining halls, the Purple Zone at 251 North, which offers food without the nine most common allergens, was recognized by MenuTrinfo as a 2024 National Allergy Awards winner. It’s a testament to the department’s commitment to meeting student needs, Hipple said, which also includes a Purple Zone at South Campus Dining Hall, a gluten-free station at Yahentamitsi and clearly labeled ingredients and allergens for all dishes.

New Menu at Mulligan’s
Looking to grab a crab cake for lunch with coworkers away from the hustle and bustle of campus—without leaving UMD? Mulligan’s, in the UMD Golf Course Clubhouse, is launching a new and expanded menu reminiscent of its pre-pandemic offerings. Its catering arm is back as well, allowing faculty and staff to order its food for meetings and retreats.
