Regents to Hear Results of McNair Investigation

The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will hear the results of an investigation into the death of UMD football player Jordan McNair at its Sept. 21 meeting.

Dr. Rod Walters, a nationally recognized sports medicine consultant the university hired in June to investigate McNair’s death, will brief the board in a closed session before findings are shared publicly later that day. The USM board voted in August to assume oversight of the Walters review as well as a separate inquiry into the broader UMD football program.

“The Board of Regents is committed to uncovering all the discoverable facts about Jordan McNair’s tragic death, and separately, the culture of the football program at the University of Maryland, College Park,” USM Board of Regents Chair James Brady said in a statement. “Once the board has the facts, we are committed to sharing what we find with the people of Maryland, and to making whatever decisions might be necessary and appropriate to best support our students.”

McNair, 19, died 15 days after suffering heatstroke during a May 29 football training session. University President Wallace D. Loh said at an Aug. 14 press conference the university accepts “legal and moral responsibility” for the mistakes that led to the tragedy and pledged to implement recommended reforms to protect Terp student-athletes.
