Grand Challenges: Global FEWture Alliance

Researchers From Across Campus Work at Nexus of Food, Energy and Water

Globally, around a billion people have difficulty accessing enough food, or the energy needed to power their homes and businesses. Another 2 billion struggle with shortages of safe water. The problems are worsening as the world heats up and its population expands.

From Baltimore neighborhoods to Nepal and Tanzania, the members of the Global FEWture Alliance apply their multidisciplinary expertise to health and environmental challenges at this food-energy-water (FEW) nexus.

Projects include harvesting rainwater for urban agriculture, using energy-efficient water treatment methods and converting landfill waste into clean energy—scalable solutions that aim to build healthier, more sustainable communities.

Learn about one of 50 projects that make up the $30 million Grand Challenges Grant Program, dedicated to advancing solutions to humanity’s most pressing issues through education, research, scholarship, creative activities and service.
