A cloud of color rises at McKeldin Mall as students celebrate Holi at an event yesterday sponsored by the Hindu Students Council.

Hundreds of students and other members of the campus community converged on the mall yesterday to launch brightly colored powders known as gulal at each other and into the air, welcoming spring and observing the Hindu holiday of Holi.

As other celebrations of the ancient holiday held around the world do, the yearly UMD tradition sponsored by the Hindu Students Council draws a multi-ethnic and multi-religious band of merrymakers.
