There’s no summer break for construction around campus. While students were interning in Silicon Valley or studying Spanish abroad, workers were pouring concrete, hanging drywall and putting finishes touches on new buildings across the University of Maryland.

In addition, UMD also upgraded classrooms in four buildings, including Architecture, Plant Sciences, Bioscience Research and the Computer Science Instructional Center. On the lower half of McKeldin Mall, toward the Thomas V. Miller Jr. Administration Building, new, brighter streetlights will improve visibility at night.

Learn when the dust will settle for major construction across UMD (and in case you missed it, check out yesterday’s transportation updates story for Purple Line news):

From the outside, the new engineering building next to the IDEA Factory appears mostly finished, with glass and brick installed. Interior work is now underway, and it’s on schedule to be completed in July 2026. Zupnik Hall will be the new home to the departments of civil and environmental engineering and mechanical engineering, the Quantum Technology Center, as well as student organizations.

Graduate Student Housing
The new development, located on the site of Old Leonardtown, is about 50% complete. Featuring fully furnished studios and two- to five-bedroom apartments, the community will accommodate 741 graduate student residents. It is anticipated to open in Fall 2026, with easy access to the Purple Line and Paint Branch Trail. Currently, interior drywall, flooring and ceiling work is ongoing. A new road called Graduate Way has been paved, connecting Yale Avenue and Princeton Avenue behind Fraternity Row. As utilities are linked near Rhode Island Avenue and Campus Drive, there could be pedestrian impacts for a few weeks; be on the lookout for updates.

Located behind Fraternity Row on Yale Avenue, the 40,000-square-foot center for Jewish student life will feature a kosher dining hall and café, multipurpose rooms, staff offices and a professional rehearsal space (for a cappella and yoga practice). The building structure is nearly complete, with drywall and windows going up over the summer, and interior work and landscaping continuing throughout the fall. The center is expected to open in 2026.

Opening Sept. 12, the new 44,000-square-foot building, adjacent to the Xfinity Center, features a practice court, a strength and conditioning facility, expanded locker rooms and training areas, and lounges and offices for staff of both the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

NextGen Energy Program
Construction is in its earliest stages for a new heating and power plant for the university, visible from Baltimore Avenue. NextGen puts UMD on a pathway to achieve the goal of a fossil fuel-free energy system by 2035 and increases efficiency and sustainability.

Originally opened in 1995, alums' home-away-from-home completed a renovation this summer. The transformed event spaces now feature all-new wood floors, LED lighting and new paint throughout. The venue will continue to host conferences, meetings, weddings, parties and more for the campus community and beyond. Campus partners are invited to tour the space at its event venue grand re-opening on Oct. 15.
