Annual University Awards Celebration Goes Virtual

Twenty seniors were named to the Maryland Medallion Society and are the finalists for UMD’s three biggest awards for undergraduates: the H.C. Byrd Award, the Sally Sterling Byrd Award and the Wilson H. Elkins Award.
There won’t be a banquet this weekend to honor some of the University of Maryland’s most exceptional students. But that doesn’t mean these Terps will go unrecognized.
While most students are back at home and taking online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Division of Student Affairs this week is still presenting the 39th annual Student Leadership Awards to celebrate the contributions of Terps who have excelled in the classroom, actively participated in student life and distinguished themselves as leaders.
The division, the Stamp Student Union and Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society are rolling out 26 awards all week long, including those for top resident assistant, member of Greek life, student-athletes, and advocates for underrepresented groups and causes such as mental health. All are profiled on an awards website launched yesterday and will be featured on the Stamp’s social media channels.

Byrd Award, the Sally Sterling Byrd Award and the Wilson H. Elkins Award. The first two honor seniors who self-identify as male and female, respectively, who contributed to the university’s advancement, while the latter award goes to a senior who contributed significantly to campus activities and student affairs. Recipients of those awards, as well as the Outstanding Graduate Student Distinguished Service Award, will be announced on the website at 3 p.m. Friday.
“Students are what make university life so special, and our student leaders continue to add to the culture and value of life at the University of Maryland,” said Patty A. Perillo, vice president for student affairs. “We’re so honored to be able to recognize the contributions and commitment of some of our greatest student leaders with our university awards.”
