Spotlighting the Legendary Voice of the Terps

Over Nearly Half a Century, Johnny Holliday Has Become Source of Comfort, Hope for Marylanders

Johnny Holliday captured the joy of Terp fans everywhere when the University of Maryland men’s basketball team defeated Indiana to win the 2002 national championship and he exclaimed, “The kids have done it!”  It’s just one of hundreds of Terp football and basketball games the play-by-play broadcaster has called over nearly 50 years.

“CBS Saturday Morning” in a new segment highlighted how Holliday has become a trusted voice not just on the court, but off it, too.

One of his proudest moments, he said, was when he sang at friend and local TV reporter and anchor Westley Moore’s funeral in 1982. Moore’s then-3-year-old son, current Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, credits Holliday with helping to heal the family.

“He is the voice of Maryland,” Moore said. “He’s been the one to help to guide us, to be there in the greatest celebrations, to be there in the down times as well.”
