New Football Coach Lands 11 Recruits on National Signing Day

Maryland’s coaching staff breaks into cheers and high-fives as four-star recruit Lance LeGendre chooses the Terps yesterday.
Under new Head Coach Michael Locksley, Maryland Football yesterday added 11 student-athletes on National Signing Day, increasing the 2019 recruiting class to 17.
The class includes four four-star signees, a pair of ESPN300 members and four players who earned Washington Post All-Met honors.
“I'm thrilled with the quality young men that we signed to our 2019 class,” Locksley said. “Building our Maryland Football family is a process, and this class will play a major role in our future. Our staff did a tremendous job coming together in a short amount of time to add high-quality recruits to our football program. We were able to keep a great deal of talent from the DMV home while also adding impact players from across the country. We’re excited as a staff to put out a product our fans can be proud of this fall.”
Of the 17 student-athletes signed, seven are from the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia region, and a total of nine states and Washington, D.C. are represented.
Locksley had two previous stints on the Maryland football coaching staff before he was hired Dec. 4 to helm it. He divided his time between Maryland and Alabama, where he was offensive coordinator, until that team finished its season at the College Football Playoff National Championships on Jan. 7. Then Locksley, who had won the 2018 Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach, ramped up his hiring and recruiting—a talent for which he’s known nationwide.
Among yesterday’s signees was Lance LeGendre, a four-star quarterback from Louisiana, whom Locksley started recruiting while in his former position at the University of Alabama. The No. 9-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the country chose Maryland over Florida State after visiting College Park with his mother last weekend.
A video posted to Twitter by Maryland Football showed the coaching staff breaking into cheers and high-fives when LeGendre chose the Terps, but Locksley stressed that the staff was just as emotional with every signee.

“Any time you can convince kids to come to Maryland and show them what a great opportunity this place presents academically and athletically — we’re excited,” he said.
