University President Darryll J. Pines sent the following email to the campus community on Monday morning:

My fellow Terrapins,

One of the privileges I hold as president is celebrating the remarkable achievements of our graduating Terps. This year's campuswide event on May 20 will honor graduates from Summer 2023, Fall 2023 and Spring 2024.

With great anticipation, I am thrilled to announce that our 2024 Commencement ceremony speaker will be Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.

Since the early days of Gov. Moore's tenure, we have fostered an outstanding partnership, marked by his choice of using our university as the backdrop for his first public event as governor-elect. I am honored that our graduates will have the opportunity to learn from his journey, beginning from his Takoma Park roots to becoming Maryland’s first Black governor in the state’s 246-year history.

A trailblazing politician, advocate and businessman
A distinguished military veteran, author and Maryland native, Gov. Moore is the third African American elected governor in the history of the United States. He was honored as a Rhodes Scholar, and his exceptional academic work and fearless service earned him a spot as a White House fellow, advising on issues of national security and international relations.

As an entrepreneur, Gov. Moore’s work has encompassed forging success in higher education for underserved students via his company, BridgeEDU, and exploring race, equity and opportunities in his books, “The Other Wes Moore” and “Five Days.”

We are fortunate he will share his insights and wisdom with our graduating class, friends and family.

Commencement ceremonies
I look forward to seeing all of our graduates at SECU Stadium on Monday, May 20 at 6 p.m. for the campus commencement ceremony. Individual school and college ceremonies will be held on Monday, May 20, Tuesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 22. The Commencement website has additional information about tickets, ceremony schedules, regalia and answers to frequently asked questions.

We cannot wait to welcome Gov. Moore back to campus for this annual celebration of Terrapin excellence.

Sincerely,

President Darryll Pines Signature
