Four Terps logged multiple goals as the No. 3 Maryland women’s lacrosse team beat No. 20 Rutgers 11-8 in round two of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at SECU Stadium.
The Terps will next face No. 6 Navy at 5 p.m. Thursday in College Park in a game that will air on ESPNU.
Maryland never trailed, scoring the game's first four goals as part of a six-goal first quarter to take command early. Lauren LaPointe collected two goals and two assists in the opening frame, while Keeley Block scored two of her eventual four goals, and Jordyn Lipkin and Maisy Clevenger each found the back of the net.
Clevenger became the third Terp with two first-half goals as she scored one of Maryland's two goals in the second quarter. Kori Edmondson netted her 45th of the year in the frame as the Terps took an 8-5 lead into the break. She scored her second of the day in the Terps' two-goal third quarter to keep them in the lead entering the final 15 minutes. Block, who entered the game with 35 goals on the season, added another two in the second half, including a hat trick with 37 seconds left in the third period and a final goal for Maryland to open the fourth, bringing the score to 11-7. Rutgers managed only one more goal.
JJ Suriano made 10 key saves in the win. Kayla Gilmore secured six of Maryland's 13 draw controls as the Terps improved to 29-2 all-time against Rutgers, with a perfect 14-0 record in College Park. Maryland is now 30-3 in NCAA Tournament games in College Park under head coach Cathy Reese.
