UMD Honored With 5 National Awards in Collegiate Dining

By Tracy Kiras

The University of Maryland received multiple awards from the National Association of College & University Food Services recognizing its commitment to innovative dining experiences, nutrition and educational programming.

Among the top honors, Dining Services received a Loyal E. Horton Dining Grand Prize Award for the Wellness and Nutrition Program of the Year, as well as the grand prize for its Smart Fuel for Smart Students program, an informational and interactive series held every Tuesday in March, National Nutrition Month.

UMD Dining Services also received bronze awards in the following categories:

  • Special Diet Program of the Year for the Purple Zone, a designated area in dining halls that provides food free from the eight most common allergens and gluten. It aims to ensure that students with food allergies and sensitivities can enjoy a safe and positive dining experience.
  • Outreach and Education Program of the Year, recognizing the Pantry and Teaching Kitchen programming.
  • Residential Special Event of the Year for its March Madness programming and creation of a dynamic menu to complement the basketball tournament theme.

“Healthy food is fundamental to a thriving campus, and these awards for excellence in nutritional education and awareness, inclusive and allergen-free dining, and emergency food support for Terps in need are a powerful testament to their impact,” said Colleen Wright-Riva, assistant vice president for student affairs.
