By Maryland Athletics Staff

The No. 10-seeded Terps men’s basketball team (17-13) will take on second-seeded Alabama (25-6) at 8:45 p.m. today on TNT in the second round of the NCAA tournament, while the second-seeded Maryland women (24-2) will take on No. 15-seeded Mount St. Mary's (17-6) in the first round at 4 p.m. today on ESPN.

In West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday night, Eric Ayala scored 23 points and Maryland clamped down on defense down the stretch to snag a 63-54 victory over No. 7 UConn in the series opener.

The Terrapins held UConn to 32% shooting to overcome the Huskies' strong physical game. Maryland was outrebounded 40-29 but its defense carried the Terps in the upset.

The winner of the women’s game in San Antonio, Texas, will advance to face the victor of a matchup between No. 7-seeded Alabama (16-9) and No. 10-seeded North Carolina (13-10).

Earlier this month, Maryland won its third straight Big Ten regular season title and sixth in seven years since joining the league. The Terps won their second straight Big Ten Tournament championship and fifth in seven years. Brenda Frese was named ESPN National Coach of the Year on Friday.
