One of the greatest traditions in college basketball will return late on Wednesday as the University of Maryland men's basketball team kicks off the 2025-26 season with the Midnight Mile.
The men's basketball team will run the traditional mile at Kehoe Track at Ludwig Field alongside Terp students.
Hall of Fame head coach Lefty Driesell created the original event on Oct. 15, 1971, when he lined up his players at 12:03 a.m. for a one-mile run to mark the first official day of practice. Nearly every team across the country soon followed suit with its own Midnight Madness celebration.
The “run” of show at UMD will be:
- 11:15 p.m. Wednesday: Gates open at Ludwig Field
- 12:03 a.m. Thursday: Mile run begins
- Post-race: Raffle drawing
The first 300 students in attendance will receive a Midnight Mile T-shirt complimentary of Ledo Pizza. All students will receive a race packet, race bib, pizza and drinks.
Race packet pickup will take place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday outside the Stamp Student Union.
Maryland is coming off a 27-9 campaign in 2024-25, when the Terps reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2016.
The Terps will host UMBC on Oct. 27 in an exhibition game at the Xfinity Center before opening this season against Coppin State on Nov. 3 at CFC Arena in Baltimore. The home opener will be on Nov. 7 against Georgetown.
Season tickets are on sale for as low as $199. Mini-packs and single-game tickets are also available. Fans can purchase tickets at UMTerps.com, by calling the Xfinity Center Ticket Office at 301.314.7060, or by visiting the Ticket Office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
All games will be broadcast on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday, Chris Knoche and Walt Williams calling the action.
