Graham Reappointed as Dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering

Senior Vice President and Provost Jennifer King Rice sent the following message to university leaders on Tuesday:

I am delighted to announce the reappointment of Samuel Graham as dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering through June 30, 2031. This decision follows a comprehensive formal review process in accordance with university policy.  An appointed committee of faculty, staff and students assessed Dean Graham’s strategic and operational leadership in advancing the school’s mission and provided constructive recommendations. The review process included a presentation by Dean Graham on the A. James Clark School of Engineering’s progress since 2021, a formal survey to support a data-driven evaluation, and a series of interviews and forums with faculty, staff, students, university leadership and external constituents.

The review highlighted Dean Graham’s strategic leadership, working with faculty, staff and students to develop a clear strategic plan for the Clark School that aligns with university priorities and shows measurable progress. In addition, he has fostered a strong culture of belonging through recognition programs and inclusive initiatives, while his warm and approachable leadership style has earned him praise from faculty, staff and peer deans.

Dean Graham’s student-centered commitment, reflected in his support for student organizations, advisory councils and financial assistance, has been a defining feature of his leadership. His new Vertically Integrated Projects initiative has become a model for campus. Additionally, he has effectively navigated complex challenges, including pandemic recovery, funding uncertainty and major infrastructure investments, while maintaining strong research leadership through initiatives such as the Industrial AI Center and the NSF Quantum Networks Research Center. His ability to build cross-campus partnerships and his engagement with alumni, donors and government stakeholders underscore his effectiveness as dean.

Dean Graham and I have discussed the review and identified opportunities for further growth that include enhanced communication with students, particularly graduate students; increased accessibility for staff, and addressing concerns about access to the dean’s time; and greater transparency of the school’s organizational structures. The dean has demonstrated a thoughtful understanding of the feedback and a strong commitment to addressing these challenges.

I am grateful for Dean Graham’s impactful leadership and am confident that he will continue to drive the A. James Clark School of Engineering toward new heights of excellence.

Sincerely,

Jennifer King Rice signature
