Two-time national champion Michael Marchiano '09 has been named head coach of the University of Maryland women's soccer program.
Marchiano has served as the team's interim head coach since mid-October after returning to his alma mater in November 2023 as an assistant coach. Marchiano was a four-year midfielder for the Terrapins men's soccer team, which won NCAA titles in 2005 and 2008, and served as captain twice.
"Maryland soccer is in Mike's blood, and we are thrilled to have him leading our women's soccer program," said Damon Evans, the Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. "Mike has tremendous passion for his alma mater and has a winning pedigree"
Marchiano called his promotion an “unbelievable opportunity.”
“Being a student-athlete at Maryland was one of the best experiences of my life, and I'll do all I can to assist in creating a similar pathway for our players,” he said. “There is a lot of work to do to achieve our goals of winning consistently at the highest levels. I cannot wait to get started with the staff and the players".
Marchiano served as head coach of the Drexel Dragons men's soccer team from 2020-22. He guided the Dragons to back-to-back CAA tournament appearances and helped lead Chris Donovan to become the program's second CAA Player of the Year and only the second player in program history to be drafted to the MLS.
Before becoming the head coach at Drexel, Marchiano spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Loyola University in Maryland and previously was an assistant coach for two seasons at Army West Point. IMarchiano also spent two seasons as an assistant at Maryland.
In his playing days, Marchiano featured in 59 games at Maryland under head coach Sasho Cirovski. He was awarded the team's Peter Lowry Award as a senior, recognizing the member who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership and distinguished citizenship on campus.
In addition to his work with the Terrapins, Marchiano is currently the Girls ECNL technical director with Pipeline SC in Maryland.
His wife, Kelley ’10, was a member of the Terrapins track & field team. The couple has a daughter, Mila, and a son, Nico.
