The University of Maryland’s basketball teams got a first peek inside their dedicated training facility that aims to keep them at the top of their game.
The sleek and modern Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center, named for the longtime Terps benefactor, offers new amenities to the student-athletes and staff: a practice court, a strength and conditioning room, sports medicine rooms; lounge, and film and locker room spaces, along with offices and conference rooms for both programs. A new tunnel connects the 45,000-square-foot facility to the Xfinity Center.
“Welcome to your new house,” said Athletic Director Jim Smith told the student-athletes during the tour earlier this month. “This opportunity was built because of the success of this program, and now you get to inherit that success.”
Student-athletes grinned, gaped and jumped up and down as they stepped inside each new room and discovered the state-of-the-art amenities.
“This is special. This was built for us, and we are the very first teams to make this our home,” said women’s head coach Brenda Frese. “Treasure it. Cherish it. It’s a privilege for us to be here.”
