For an entire generation of undergraduates, yesterday was a first: Most of today’s seniors were still in high school the last time the University of Maryland had a snow day in February 2021. And boy did they make the most of it.

Hundreds faced off on McKeldin Mall Tuesday evening  for an epic, free-for-all snowball fight. Others staged a glowing lightsaber showdown, with the falling flakes adding distinct “Kill Bill” vibes. Many tried their hands at building snowmen—and even one sculpted “Testudsnow.” A sport more common in regions to Maryland’s north made an appearance as cross-country skiers left tracks across campus. And somehow, somewhere, a few Terps found old-school dining hall trays to revive the tradition of sledding on them.

Our photographers fanned out to capture the beauty of the approximately five-inch snowfall, while students did not miss out on the opportunity to document their own antics, from snow angel-making to body-surfing down hills. Here are some of the best scenes.
