Guided walking tours of the campus this Black History Month will highlight University of Maryland landmarks associated with the impact of African-Americans at the university and throughout history.
The tour was developed by Kim J. Nickerson, assistant dean and diversity officer in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, and is coordinated through the Office of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy. It includes more than a dozen stops, including the Rossborough Inn, Clarence M. Mitchell Building, Stamp Student Union and Frederick Douglass Square.
The 1.5-hour tours on Thursday and Feb. 28 have reached capacity, but a corresponding online, interactive tour is always available. Commissioned by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, it expands on a presentation that Nickerson has shared on campus, and draws from other campus reports; University Libraries; and other sources. The goal is to educate and inform the community, he said.
“I envision someone seeing this and feeling like they’re not alone or out of place,” he says.
