Video: Relive Commencement 2025

Ceremony Celebrated Graduates With Farewells, Fireworks and Kermit the Frog

Kermit the Frog charmed graduates and their families at the University of Maryland’s 2025 commencement ceremony, with his miniature academic regalia, singalong of “The Rainbow Connection” and advice to “always keep your eyes open” for new friends—something the Muppet can’t help but do.

The May 21 event, dubbed “Kermencement,” highlighted Kermit’s roots as the creation of Jim Henson ’60 while he was a UMD home economics major. It also, of course, cheered the accomplishments of the Classes of August and December 2024 and May 2025, with inspirational speeches, tassel-turning and a dazzling fireworks display.
