U.S. News Ranks UMD No. 20 Among Top Public Institutions

Engineering, Computer Science and Business Programs Also Recognized

U.S. News & World Report ranked UMD No. 20 among the top public universities and No. 59 among national universities in its new ratings released today.

The University of Maryland continues to rank among the top public schools in the nation, according to new ratings released today by U.S. News & World Report.

UMD came in at No. 20 on that list, tied with the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Washington, and placed No. 59 among national universities in the 2022 Best Colleges edition of the influential rankings.

The lists, which many prospective students rely on to narrow their college searches, are based on factors including graduation and retention rates, social mobility, faculty and financial resources, and alumni giving rate.

U.S. News also examines several academic fields and undergraduate programs in its rankings, with UMD receiving high marks in the following categories:

Engineering

  • The A. James Clark School of Engineering ranked No. 21 nationally, jumping up one place since last year, and No. 12 among public universities, with four specialties in the top 25:
    • Aerospace engineering: No. 12 overall, No. 8 among publics
    • Mechanical engineering: No. 20 overall, No. 12 among publics
    • Computer engineering: No. 22 overall, No. 14 among publics
    • Electrical engineering: No. 24 overall, No. 15 among publics

Computer Science

  • UMD came in at No. 18 nationally in this category and No. 9 among publics, with five specialties in the top 25:
    • Artificial intelligence: No. 10 overall, No. 6 among publics
    • Cybersecurity: No. 8 overall, No. 4 among publics
    • Data analytics/science: No. 21 overall, No. 10 among publics
    • Bio computing: No. 10 overall, No. 4 among publics
    • Software engineering: No. 16 overall, No. 12 among publics

Business

  • The Robert H. Smith School of Business ranked No. 23 nationally and No. 13 among publics, with five specialties in the top 25:
    • Entrepreneurship: No. 21 overall, No. 7 among publics
    • Management: No. 22 overall, No. 13 among publics
    • Management information systems: No. 9 overall, No. 7 among publics
    • Marketing: No. 25 overall, No. 14 among publics
    • Supply chain management/logistics: No. 18 overall, No. 14 among publics

UMD also earned recognition for its robust living-learning communities, tying for No. 13 nationally, and ranked No. 29 among the best colleges for veterans.
