Pines to Prioritize Excellence, Inclusiveness

New President Outlines Vision for Transformed University

In a video to mark his first day as the University of Maryland’s new president, Darryll J. Pines outlined a pair of interlocking missions: to strengthen teaching and learning, research, innovation, the arts and athletics at UMD; and to create an inclusive, multicultural campus environment.

“As an institution of higher education, we have a responsibility to meet these global challenges,” Pines said, referencing what he called the two pandemics of COVID-19 and violence against the Black community. “And in that obligation I see the opportunity to reinvent the modern public research university.”
