Women of Influence Awards to Celebrate Contributions of Four Campus Honorees

By Maryland Today Staff

The President’s Commission on Women’s Issues (PCWI) invites the campus community to join this year’s Women of Influence Awards virtual ceremony on Thursday from 1-2 p.m.

The awards, established by the PCWI in 1977 as the Outstanding Woman of the Year Award, annually recognize members of the UMD community who have distinguished themselves by working with and for communities of women that are diverse in identity, discipline and other dimensions of difference.

Recipients demonstrate commitment to mentorship, work-life balance and community engagement, and they work to prevent sexual harassment and support social and political justice.

This year’s honorees are: Sarah Cassie Burnett, Ph.D. candidate and research assistant in the Department of Mathematics; Carol Espy-Wilson, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research; Laura Bohórquez Garcia, former coordinator of the Undocumented Student Program in the Division of Student Affairs; and Keira Martone, assistant director of resident life for student conduct.

The event will be held via Zoom. To register, go to: https://go.umd.edu/pcwi.
