The University of Maryland had its strongest showing to date in the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, with 46 undergraduates of limited financial means winning new awards to study or intern abroad.
UMD’s total from the October application round accounted for 3% of all awards. Terps were offered $140,500, a major increase from the October 2024 cycle, which produced 32 UMD awards totaling $98,500.
The achievement reflects the successful partnership between Education Abroad (EA) and the National Scholarships Office (NSO) as well as the ongoing impact of UMD’s advising model, which includes support through application workshops, financial literacy guidance and training for global learning advisors on scholarship opportunities.
In addition, Education Abroad’s Gilman Guarantee continues to strengthen access. Since 2023, EA has invested more than $440,000 to guarantee qualified students a minimum $500 scholarship when they work with NSO.
