University of Maryland leadership on Friday celebrated faculty members whose scholarship, research and innovation have earned them elections to some of the nation’s most prestigious academic and professional organizations. Collectively, UMD faculty members hold more than 110 national academy memberships.

“Being elected to a national academy is a true confirmation of the legacy each of you has created through your groundbreaking scholarship and innovation,” said President Darryll J. Pines at the inaugural annual event. “It is a powerful symbol of how your work has influenced national policy conversations and the direction of our country’s future, and it is a testament not only to individual excellence, but a contribution to our collective, institutional momentum in improving the public good.”

Hosted by Pines and Senior Vice President and Provost Jennifer King Rice, the event honored newly recognized faculty members and existing university scholars who are members or fellows of the National Academy of Education, National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Inventors, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Public Administration, National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

“Our faculty are at the heart of everything we do, pushing the boundaries of discovery, mentoring and inspiring our students, and addressing some of the most complex challenges facing our world today,” said Rice. “The individuals we celebrate this evening exemplify that impact. Together, you demonstrate the extraordinary reach and excellence of the University of Maryland.”
