Union Lane to Close for Purple Line Construction

By Maryland Today Staff

A new road closure will go into effect next week on the University of Maryland campus to expedite construction of the Purple Line, adding to several other closures in support of the light-rail and other construction projects.

Beginning on or about Thursday, July 6, access to Union Lane from Campus Drive (near the Stamp Student Union) will be closed. The Union Lane Garage will be accessed using Fieldhouse Drive. (See vehicle and pedestrian detour maps.)

Below is a summary of the current closures on campus and tips for success.

Summer Closures
Here are all of the planned changes on campus this summer (see map):

  • Campus Drive will be closed from Paint Branch Drive to Regents Drive for Purple Line construction (beginning Thursday, June 29).
  • Campus Drive is closed from Regents Drive to Union Lane for Purple Line construction.
  • Fieldhouse Drive is closed in the area south of the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center for utility construction.
  • Stadium Drive between Paint Branch Drive and Engineering Drive is closed for construction of Stanley R. Zupnik Hall for the summer and beyond.
  • Regents Drive Garage is closed for repairs. Transportation Services has directed employees who use the garage to park in the closest faculty/staff overflow lot.

Impacts

  • Vehicle detours are in place. Please follow the linked map for details.
  • Pedestrian detours are required in many places. All pedestrian detours are ADA-compliant. (See maps).

Tips for Success This Summer

  • Enter and exit campus from University Boulevard (Maryland Route 193) at the intersections with Paint Branch Drive (near the Xfinity Center), Stadium Drive (near The Clarice) or Campus Drive/Adelphi Road (near University of Maryland Global Campus).
  • Allow extra time to travel around campus. Your typical routes around campus may be closed and detours are likely to add additional travel time.
  • Consider alternate ways to commute to campus, such as biking, carpooling or public transportation. Visit the Transportation Services website to learn more about incentives and resources for sustainable commuting.
  • If you are hosting a large event or camp this summer, provide guests and attendees with information regarding closures and detours.

Stay Up-to-date
Please remember that with any construction project, plans and timelines are subject to change. To find the most up-to-date road closures and detours, visit UMD’s Purple Line website for impacts on campus and the official Purple Line website for impacts beyond campus.

Use caution and follow all posted signs and flaggers when traveling near construction areas. If you have questions or encounter issues while traveling around campus, including accessibility concerns, contact purpleline@umd.edu.
