Senior Vice President and Provost Jennifer King Rice sent the following message to campus leaders on Monday morning:
I am delighted to announce the extension of Dr. William Cohen’s appointment as associate provost and dean for undergraduate studies through June 30, 2027.
Over the past decade, Dean Cohen has demonstrated exceptional leadership, resulting in significant improvements and innovations that have enhanced the undergraduate student academic experience. He has been instrumental in advancing thoughtful improvements to our general education program and refining the learning outcomes assessment process to reflect our mission and values.
His collaborative approach has fostered increased campus support and investments in our living-learning programs, now ranked among the top 10 in the nation, including new programs in the Honors College and College Park Scholars. Additionally, Dean Cohen spearheaded the expansion of the UMD Fellows program, leveraging our strategic location near the state and national capitals to offer students outstanding experiential learning opportunities for careers in public service.
His commitment to access and affordability is evident in his efforts to broaden the Incentive Awards Program and oversee the establishment of the Maryland Promise Program. Under his leadership, the Office of Undergraduate Studies raised nearly $35 million to support students during the university’s previous fundraising campaign. He has led the development of initiatives that promote the success of all students, demonstrated by the university’s outstanding retention and graduation rates, and the exceptional number of students who have won prestigious national scholarships and awards.
I am grateful for Dean Cohen's impactful leadership and confident in his continued contributions to our university.
Sincerely,
Jennifer King Rice
Senior Vice President and Provost
