University President Darryll J. Pines sent the following email to campus leaders on Tuesday morning:
It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Blakely R. Pomietto has been named assistant president and chief of staff for the Office of the President, effective July 2, 2025.
Dr. Pomietto brings a wealth of higher education and administrative experience from within the University System of Maryland (USM), most recently serving as senior vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer at the University of Maryland Global Campus. She has spent more than two decades working across the USM in a range of academic and leadership roles, including on our own campus as director at the School of Public Health, where she functioned as chief of staff. During her time on our campus, she played an integral role in the transformation and growth of what was formerly the College of Health and Human Performance into an accredited, nationally ranked public health school.
In addition to her professional experience in College Park, Dr. Pomietto earned her master’s degree in public health from our university before completing her doctorate in education from Capella University.
As assistant president and chief of staff, Dr. Pomietto will collaborate closely with university leadership and internal and external stakeholders on a range of programs and initiatives. She will provide critical input and counsel to assist with strategic planning and decision-making and in fostering strong relationships between this office and key partners on campus and beyond. With her strong foundation, I am confident that she will be able to dive in quickly as we lead our campus in pursuit of excellence.
Dr. Pomietto’s selection follows an extensive USM-wide search launched earlier this year. I want to extend my gratitude to the members of the search committee who led this effort, including Chair Jeffrey Hollingsworth. I also want to once again thank outgoing Assistant President and Chief of Staff Michele Eastman for her nearly four decades of dedicated service and her commitment to supporting this transition. She retires June 30.
I hope you will join me in welcoming Dr. Pomietto to our Terrapin community.
