The University of Maryland will serve as the presenting sponsor of the inaugural Washington Post Global AI Summit on Sept. 23 in New York City, a collaboration that highlights UMD’s leadership in advancing innovation and shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
The summit, which will be streamed live, will explore how AI is transforming the workforce, business, education, health care and society. UMD President Darryll J. Pines and Hal Daumé III, director of the Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland (AIM), will be on stage for an insightful conversation about the role of higher education in developing impactful AI to serve the public good.
Other speakers at the event hail from Google, the International Monetary Fund, LinkedIn, Manas AI, Amini, Luiss Guido Carli University and the United Nations.
With more than five decades of leadership in AI, UMD is at the forefront of collaborative research, training the leaders of an AI-infused workforce and applying AI to strengthen the economy and communities. Last year, the university launched AIM, uniting AI experts across campus to focus on responsible, ethical development and use of the technology to advance public good in industry, government and society.
UMD boasts over 200 faculty engaged in AI research and teaching, offering 200-plus AI-related courses across more than 50 departments, placing the university among the top 10 public institutions in AI. The university also ranks in the top three in number of AI publications in the last five years, and is a top-five producer of Ph.D.s in AI.
