The University of Maryland has launched TerpAI, a new UMD-owned chatbot powered by OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, and available to all UMD students, faculty and staff. This is one of several generative AI (GenAI) services provided by the Division of Information Technology.
TerpAI leverages natural language processing to generate responses based on user input, which is never shared outside of UMD. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to review their current practices and usage of public AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and the new DeepSeek app, and adopt UMD-approved AI tools for work- and study-related uses that meet the university’s privacy and security standards.
To help Terps navigate the use of generative AI in an ethical and responsible way, the university has released generative AI guidelines for learning, teaching, work-related functions and research.
All members of the university community are urged to read the full guidance to understand acceptable and prohibited uses of GenAI, and to access available resources and learn more.
The Teaching & Learning Center also offers a variety of resources to help guide faculty on best practices on how to best integrate GenAI tools into courses.
