UMD Names Interim Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer

Charles R. Reuning, University of Maryland vice president and chief administrative officer, sent the following message to university leadership on Friday:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Bill Olen as interim associate vice president and chief facilities officer, leading the Facilities Management organization, effective with the retirement of Kristy Long on Nov. 30.

Bill is a graduate of the University of Maryland—a lifelong Terp who earned a B.S. in horticulture and a B.A. in urban studies. Bill brings to this role over 40 years of experience in Facilities Management. His extensive background includes roles as project manager, manager, director, and since 2013, executive director of the Department of Planning and Construction. Bill is a licensed landscape architect.

Bill leads one of the two Service Centers for the University System of Maryland. Key capital projects managed by Bill and his team include Stanley R. Zupnik Hall at UMD (scheduled for completion in 2026). Recently completed projects include the Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center at UMD, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Communication Arts and Humanities at Bowie State University, the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and the Education and Health Sciences Building at Frostburg State University.

Bill’s extensive knowledge of UMD and his familiarity with the University System of Maryland and the state of Maryland will be invaluable as he assumes the responsibilities of associate vice president. Bill will work with the senior leaders of FM and me, as we continue to deliver timely, cost-effective, high-quality service to the campus community and the Service Center, in support of the university’s mission. He will also oversee key initiatives, including the NextGen Energy Program, optimization of the Facilities Service Central platform and implementation of the Campus Facilities Plan.

I want to sincerely thank Kristy Long for her dedicated service as the interim associate vice president and chief facilities officer over the past year. She embraced the interim position, delivered on key FM initiatives and made improvements to Facilities Management. Additionally, she served as the executive director of operations, maintenance and utilities for six years, making significant positive impacts to that organization, its mission and its customer service.

Please join me in congratulating Bill on his appointment and in supporting him as he takes on this new role. Bill can be reached at wolen@umd.edu.

Sincerely,

Bob Reuning
