UMD Named to Forbes, Newsweek Lists of Best Employers and Workplaces

By Maryland Today Staff

For the fourth year in a row, the University of Maryland was recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best Employers by State for 2024. Newsweek also named UMD on its 2024 list of America’s Greatest Workplaces for the second consecutive year.

UMD stands at No. 7 among employers in Maryland and is the No. 1 employer in the education sector within Maryland, according to Forbes. Its ranking, conducted in collaboration with Statista, is based on a survey of more than 160,000 employees at companies with at least 500 workers in the United States. Participants were asked how likely they’d be to recommend their employer on a scale of zero to 10; they were also asked to evaluate employers they’d worked for in the last two years and organizations they knew of via professional connections or through friends and family.

In the Newsweek ranking, UMD was one of only 12 universities recognized with the honor. Working with Plant-A Insights Group, Newsweek polled more than 250,000 American employees on topics like work-life balance, company culture, compensation and benefits, and training and career progression. UMD earned four and a half out of five stars, an increase of a half-star from last year.

“I’ve valued every day I’ve come to work at the University of Maryland for nearly three decades, so I’m unsurprised we ranked so highly,” said UMD President Darryll J. Pines. “The credit goes to our talented and caring faculty and staff, whose dedication to the principles of community, diversity and excellence make UMD a great workplace.”
