UMD Among Peace Corps’ 2025 Top Volunteer-Producing Schools

By Maryland Today Staff

The University of Maryland is ranked No. 4 in the large school category among Peace Corps’ 2025 Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges and Universities list released on Wednesday.

Twenty-eight UMD alums are currently serving in 17 countries around the world, including Guinea, North Macedonia, Peru, Philippines, Senegal and Costa Rica.

“Through our undergraduate programs and distinctive co-curricular experiences, UMD students graduate ready for careers in public service,” said William A. Cohen, associate provost and dean for undergraduate studies. “We are proud that so many Terps choose to serve in the Peace Corps. It’s a powerful way to make a difference in the world while broadening their perspective and developing the leadership skills needed in today’s global workforce.”

Since the Peace Corps’ founding in 1961, the University of Maryland has produced 1,175 alums who have served abroad as volunteers.

The Peace Corps’ model of community-based development and people-to-people diplomacy connects skilled, committed Americans to work with welcoming host communities. More than 240,000 Americans in 144 countries have supported global progress in agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, health, and youth development in some of the most remote areas of the world.
