For the sixth year in a row, the University of Maryland has been highlighted by The Chronicle of Higher Education as the nation’s top producer of computer and information sciences bachelor’s degrees among residential universities. The university is No. 4 overall in production of bachelor's degrees in these fields.
The report aggregated bachelor’s degrees conferred by colleges in 32 disciplines each year from 2018 to 2023 using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, a part of the U.S. Department of Education. Only first majors were considered.
UMD students earned more than 1,400 degrees in the 2022-23 academic year across three majors counted in the report: computer science in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, information science in the College of Information and management information systems in the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Computer science and information science are the top two undergraduate majors at Maryland.
UMD’s undergraduate computer science program is ranked No. 16 nationwide and in the top 10 among public universities by U.S. News & World Report, and saw a nearly 70% increase in conferred bachelor’s degrees from 507 in FY2018 to 856 in FY2023. The College of Information, which launched its bachelor’s degree in information science in 2018, conferred more than 450 bachelor's degrees in FY 2023. Maryland’s management information systems major, which conferred more than 100 degrees in 2023, ranks No. 9 in the country and No. 7 among public institutions by U.S. News.
UMD continues to create bachelor's degree programs in these areas that will contribute to the university’s rankings in the future. The B.S. in Social Data Science—a partnership between the College of Information and College of Behavioral and Social Sciences—provides students with expertise in the complex skills needed to create and work with information and data that capture aspects of human behavior. B.A. and B.S. in Immersive Media Design options combine the arts and computer science in a degree program between the College of Arts and Humanities and College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. The B.A. in Technology and Information Design from the College of Information prepares students for user-centered design careers.
In addition to their undergraduate accomplishments, these colleges, schools and programs are consistently highly ranked for their graduate programs and faculty excellence. In U.S. News’ annual Best Graduate Schools rankings, the College of Information ranks No. 3, information systems ranks No. 7 and computer science ranks No. 16. Computer science is also ranked No. 6 nationally and No. 10 globally by CSrankings.org, based on faculty publications from the last five years.
