Traveling Abroad for Spring Break? UMD Encourages Consulting These Resources First

Ross Lewin, associate vice president for international affairs, sent the following message to the campus community on Friday:

As spring break approaches, members of our campus community may be making travel plans. Please consult reliable and up-to-date information when making travel decisions.

Those planning international travel are advised to review the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories and country information for their destination before departure, and to monitor updates while abroad. Travelers may also consider enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and communications from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, and subscribing to the Security Updates for U.S. Citizens WhatsApp channel. The University Health Center also recently shared information about travel precautions related to rising measles and mumps cases in the U.S. and internationally.

International students and scholars with travel questions are encouraged to consult International Student and Scholars Services (ISSS) before departing the U.S. ISSS is available to provide general guidance and share relevant information with international students and scholars. ISSS may be reached via email at isss_inquiry@umd.edu or by telephone at 301.314.7740.

All travelers should plan ahead and remain attentive to official guidance related to their destinations.

Wishing you a safe and restful spring break,

Ross Lewin
Associate Vice President for International Affairs
