Reese Becomes UMD’s Winningest Women’s Lacrosse Coach

By Maryland Today Staff

With the No. 2 UMD women’s lacrosse team’s 16–6 win over No. 8 Virginia on Wednesday, Head Coach Cathy Reese notched her 261st victory at the helm, becoming the program’s all-time-wins leader.

Reese passed her college coach and Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Hall of Famer Cindy Timchal, who led the Terps from 1991–2006 and won eight national championships. Reese, now in her 13th season, is 261–21 and has led Maryland to four national championships, 10 Final Fours and 19 conference championships.

Senior Caroline Steele and junior Brindi Griffin led Maryland (13–0) with four goals apiece in Wednesday’s win. Senior Jen Giles had four points in the effort as well, with two goals and two assists, and graduate student Erica Evans recorded a hat-trick. Senior Megan Taylor continued her standout season in goal, with nine saves to six goals allowed.

Now with six top-10 wins, UMD eyes another at 5 p.m. tomorrow against No. 7 Michigan at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. The game will be senior day as the Terps honor the careers of 10 graduating student-athletes.
