Prorated Student Refunds to Post by April 30; Direct Deposit Will Greatly Speed Process

By Maryland Today Staff

The University of Maryland aims to have all prorated refunds for room and board, parking, athletics and some other fees posted to student accounts by April 30, according to an email to students today from Student Cashiering and Financial Services.

To expedite refunds, the office recommends enrolling in direct deposit at billpay.umd.edu/refunds. Anyone previously enrolled should review their currently elected bank to ensure refunds are directed properly. The university’s ability to process paper checks is severely limited while most university operations are taking place online to limit the risk of COVID-19 transmission, and doing so would take many more weeks than returning funds by direct deposit, according to the email from Alisa Abadinsky, associate controller, financial services.

After all credits are posted, they will first be applied to any outstanding balance on student accounts. Students whose account charges were paid by a third party, such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, “may be expected to return some or all of the credit back to that third party, or we may be expected to return funds on your behalf,” Abadinsky wrote.
