Nominations Welcomed for 2025-26 First Year Book

By Laura Cech

Why does poverty exist in a country as rich as the United States? How does big data threaten democracy? When should monuments be removed from public view?

Each book selected as the University of Maryland’s “First Year Book” asks students, staff and faculty to consider important questions, prompts meaningful discussions and offers new perspectives.

Now, the First Year Book Committee is asking: What Terps should read next? Nominations will be accepted through Oct. 1.

The First Year Book Program provides a shared intellectual experience for all new students and the opportunity to discuss the book from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. The book is integrated into select first-year courses so students can engage with it in and out of the classroom.

The UMD community has been reading together since 1993. Each year, the book is chosen by a committee of faculty, staff and students representing more than 10 disciplines. Past selections have included biographies, collections of short stories, and poetry.

Currently, Terps are reading “Poverty, by America” by Pulitzer-Prize winning author Matthew Desmond. Free copies are available at the Stamp Student Union Information Desk.

Maryland Today is produced by the Office of Marketing and Communications for the University of Maryland community on weekdays during the academic year, except for university holidays.
