The First Year Book Committee is accepting nominations for the 2021-22 First Year Book.
As with all past First Year Books, the committee is looking for texts that relate to current events and important issues for the University of Maryland community to discuss.
The goal of the program, run by the Office of Undergraduate Studies, is to provide a shared intellectual experience for all new students and the opportunity to discuss a book from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.
First-year undergraduate students are provided with a copy of the book, which is integrated into selected first-year courses. Events featuring the book are held throughout the year, including typically a talk by the author.
This year's First Year Book is "Weapons of Math Destruction" by Cathy O'Neil. Past selections include "Just Mercy" by Brian Stevenson and "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot.
To submit a nomination, please fill out the nomination form. If you have any questions, contact the First Year Book Committee at fyb@umd.edu.
