Newsweek Lists UMD Among America’s Best Workplaces for LGBTQ+ Employees

By Maryland Today Staff

Newsweek named the University of Maryland in its 2024 list of America's Greatest Workplaces for LGBTQ+, acknowledging companies in the United States that have created inclusive and supportive workplaces for members of the LGBTQ+ community. UMD is one of seven higher education institutions to receive this recognition.

"We are proud of this achievement, which acknowledges the work of many to create an inclusive UMD campus that welcomes and honors all identities," said Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion Georgina Dodge. "As ever, we celebrate this recognition while acknowledging there is more work to be done, which we are committed to continuing to do together."

Last year, Campus Pride and BestColleges.com ranked UMD the nation’s No. 1 college for LGBTQ+ students, highlighting its campus climate and academic, financial and social resources.

This latest recognition is based on interviews with more than 29,000 LGBTQ+ employees nationwide, who gave more than 205,000 company reviews. Plant-A Insights Group, which compiled the data, weighed key performance indicators such as a company's commitment to the LGBTQ+ community and information gathered from social media.

This acknowledgement comes shortly after UMD was added to Newsweek’s 2024 list of America's Greatest Workplaces for Women, recognizing employers that excel in offering fair compensation, work-life balance and proactive management on diversity. With this recognition, UMD was among only 22 higher education institutions. UMD was also identified in December as one of America’s Greatest Employees for Diversity. All of these recognitions reflect the university’s commitment to ensure that every employee feels welcome and valued.
