Senior Vice President and Provost Jennifer King Rice sent the following email to the campus on Wednesday:
It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Shannon Gundy as associate vice president for enrollment management, beginning July 1. Shannon has been an integral part of the Enrollment Management team and University of Maryland community for more than 30 years.
As associate vice president, Shannon will play an essential role in the university's efforts to support students at every stage of their educational journey—from recruitment and admissions through enrollment, retention and ultimately graduation. She will oversee a large administrative unit that includes the University Registrar, Student Financial Aid, Undergraduate Admissions, Data Assessments and Technology for enrollment initiatives and Visitor Experience for prospective students and families.
Shannon will develop a forward-looking approach to how our Enrollment Management unit can continue to evolve in ways that embrace new technologies and best-practices for the use of data analytics to recruit and retain an exceptionally talented student body. With a commitment to fostering deeper partnerships, she has plans to engage with colleges, schools and units across campus and our broader community to reimagine how Enrollment Management can evolve during a time of great change in higher education. She also plans to leverage more opportunities and resources to help support our students financially to make our world-class educational opportunities at UMD accessible and affordable.
Shannon's extensive experience and dedication to our campus includes developing the Office of Undergraduate Admissions' holistic admissions process and assisting in the creation of UMD's transformational need-based aid program: Terrapin Commitment. She has also been a driver behind the implementation of UMD's participation in the Small Town and Rural Student College Network (STARS) and the Maryland Ascent Program, in order to better connect prospective students and families in Baltimore, Prince George's County and rural areas of Maryland.
Over the past three decades, Shannon's career has been on a strong forward trajectory, starting at UMD as an admissions counselor, rising to assistant director, on to associate director and then to executive director of admissions; being appointed assistant vice president for enrollment management and, most recently, serving as interim associate vice president for the past six months.
Shannon is widely regarded as one of the leading voices in enrollment management in the nation, serving on a variety of local and national admissions councils, and as the voice of the university on enrollment issues in national media outlets.
I am confident that Shannon's vision for new, innovative and collaborative approaches—coupled with the support of her incredible leadership team in enrollment management—will continue our upward momentum.
I am grateful to the search committee, chaired by Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Studies Bill Cohen, for its valued work in identifying exceptional candidates for this critical leadership position.
Please join me in congratulating Shannon!
Sincerely,
Jennifer King Rice
Senior Vice President and Provost
