MICA Encourages UMD Community to Share ‘Moments of Joy’

By Maryland Today Staff

Amid the flood of uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, UMD’s Office of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy (MICA) is striving to spread a little joy.

Through the “Moments of Joy” campaign on Instagram, MICA staff members post photos of instances that brought them happiness while adjusting to their new telework realities. Their account, @umdmica, features new posts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday while encouraging students, faculty and staff to join in with the hashtag #MICAmomentsofjoy.

“We’re hoping other people will be inspired to take a moment for themselves, regardless of what the news is saying,” said MICA Program Manager Yvette Isela Lerma Jones. “It’s really been about making sure that we’re producing some of those moments of happiness that we would have with in-person programs.”

So far, posts have highlighted the joys of cooking, midday fresh-air breaks, afternoon tea in the garden, and even DJ D-Nice’s “Club Quarantine” dance party on Instagram Live and the popular “Animal Crossing” Nintendo game.
