No student-athlete tested positive for COVID-19 during an initial on-campus screening of 105 student-athletes earlier this month, Maryland Athletics announced yesterday.
The testing, done in conjunction with the University Health Center, is part of a gradual, phased approach to the return of student-athletes to campus.
“Throughout this phase, we expect there will be some positive test results and have planned accordingly, through the implementation of state and county public health and university guidelines for education, contract tracing and self-isolation,” Maryland Athletics said in a statement.
To protect student-athletes’ privacy, the athletics department will publicly release an aggregate number of any positive tests at regular intervals during the initial phase of the return to campus, according to the statement.
