Make a Date With Love Data Week

By Maryland Today Staff

The University of Maryland invites Terps to participate in Love Data Week 2025, a celebration of data that takes place every year during the week of Valentine's Day. The theme for 2025 is "Whose Data Is It, Anyway?," spanning where it comes from, who owns it and how to use it responsibly.

The Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment, Division of Information Technology, College of Information, Stamp Student Union, University Career Center and University Libraries are coordinating a series of data-related activities and events on campus and online Feb. 10-14.

This is the third year that the University of Maryland has participated in International Love Data Week, joining other Big Ten Academic Alliance schools to host events and talks.

Some of Love Data Week 2025 events and activities at UMD include:

Discussions, workshops and talks (all week): Join UMD data experts to explore topics like careers in data, on-campus summer experiences available to students, AI, data ethics, GIS, Python, NVivo and more.

Data Open House (Tuesday): From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., pick up a treat in the Edward St. John Atrium, say hello to Testudo, talk to various offices about how they use data in their everyday work, and play data-themed games and activities.

Scavenger Hunt (through Feb. 13): Find different locations (both physical and digital) on campus that work with or provide data for UMD. Learn about their role on campus and answer a few questions for a chance to win UMD swag from the bookstore.

Vote UMD (through noon Feb. 14): Two UMD teams, a student finalist and a faculty/staff finalist, are going head to head against other Big Ten schools in the Data Viz Championship, which challenges teams to creatively visualize a variety of datasets. Cast your vote by Friday and attend the virtual Data Viz Championship Showcase at 2 p.m. to support your fellow Terps.
