Lab Safety Awareness Week Begins

By Maryland Today Staff

This year, the University of Maryland will join institutions nationwide in celebrating Lab Safety Awareness Week from Feb. 10-14, offering events and activities that recognize the importance of laboratory safety and that thank Terps for prioritizing safety.

The lineup from the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability and Risk (ESSR) includes:

  • Lab Safety Culture Spotlight Award: Nominate someone who has made a significant and positive impact on laboratory safety for this new campuswide award.
  • Safety Stand-Down and Self-Inspection Raffle: Pause normal operations on Tuesday to focus on safety for the day. Labs that complete a self-inspection will be entered into a raffle for prizes.
  • ESSR Waste Facility Tour: Sign up for a behind-the-scenes tour at 11 a.m. Wednesday and learn how hazardous waste is managed at a major research institution.
  • DIY Lab Safety Valentine’s Day Cards: Craft lab safety-themed cards from 1-3 p.m. Monday in the Kim Engineering Building Rotunda or 10 a.m.-noon Thursday in the Chemistry Building Atrium.
  • Lab Safety Week Celebration: Enjoy free refreshments, fun giveaways and engaging lab safety activities, and cheer on the announcement of award winners from 1-3 p.m. Friday at 1107 Kim Engineering Building

Event locations, times, registration links and other details can be found on the Lab Safety Awareness Week landing page.
