University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines sent the following email to the campus community today:
I write today to share an update on the search for an associate vice president for finance and chief financial officer (AVP/CFO). The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear the need for a steady and experienced leader as we navigate the financial impact on our institution.
Although the search for a permanent incumbent has been paused, we have identified a highly qualified individual who has agreed to fill this critical role on an interim basis. We are pleased to announce the selection of Brian Burnett as the university's interim associate vice president for finance and chief financial officer.
Tapping a seasoned leader for an interim appointment provides stability and expertise in a timely manner. In a career spanning over 30 years in financial management, Brian has held finance leadership positions in state agencies, state university system offices and public research universities, most recently serving as senior vice president for finance and operations and treasurer at the University of Minnesota. Brian earned a B.A. in economics, a master's degree in finance and a Ph.D. in educational leadership, research and policy from University of Colorado institutions.
This critically important position will report directly to me and will serve as a member of my cabinet. Priorities for this interim appointment will focus on advising senior campus leaders as they guide the university through the current economic downturn and toward a strong financial recovery. He will also provide leadership to the university controller, Budget and Fiscal Analysis, Audits, and Compliance departments. Vice President for Administration and Finance Carlo Colella, Senior Vice President and Provost Mary Ann Rankin and Chief of Staff Michelle Eastman will work closely with Brian to ensure his success.
Please join me in welcoming Brian Burnett, who joins the University of Maryland today.
Sincerely,
Darryll J. Pines
