Fortune ranks SPH online Master's in Public Health No. 1 in Nation

The University of Maryland School of Public Health’s (SPH) online Master of Public Health program is the best in the nation for 2025, according to Fortune magazine.

The ranking released on Thursday is based on factors including first-year retention, affordability and accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health. The evaluation was also based on consultation with experts across major public health organizations. Along with smaller classes of about 25 students per core online M.P.H. course, Fortune cited SPH’s membership in the Universitas 21 Health Research Exchange, a global network where students can collaborate to build a better understanding of—and ideas for—health systems around the world.

“This ranking underscores our mission to equip future public health leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a meaningful impact in communities around the world,” said SPH Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Jennifer Bachner. “The success of our students reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff and students to creating a rigorous and supportive learning experience.”

The School of Public Health offers a wide array of undergraduate and advanced degrees, including in-person and online M.P.H. programs. Students develop expertise to take on climate change, community health, mental health, the science of physical activity, health policy and health disparities and prepare for dozens of in-demand career paths.

““Whether online or in person, we provide a premier education that enables our diverse student body to develop the knowledge, abilities and confidence to take on the greatest challenges in public health and to succeed,” said SPH Dean Boris Lushniak.
