Forbes, Newsweek Rank UMD Among Best Workplaces in America

By Maryland Today Staff

The University of Maryland has been recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best-In-State Employers for 2023 for the third year running. The honor comes on the heels of the university’s additional recognition as one of America’s Greatest Workplaces in 2023, according to Newsweek.

The Forbes ranking, conducted in collaboration with Statista and based on a large-scale survey of employees working for companies from all industry sectors, is based on three distinct criteria: direct employee recommendations, in-state indirect recommendations and national in-industry indirect recommendations. UMD is featured among the top 10 employers in Maryland (out of 68 awarded employers) and is the No. 1 employer in the education sector within Maryland.

The Newsweek honor similarly celebrates the university as a leading force in the workplace, making UMD one of only eight universities recognized among the 1,000 major employers. Established by a wide-reaching study conducted in collaboration with Plant-A Insights Group, the rankings evaluated and scored companies based on eight categories: company image, corporate culture, working environment, work-life balance, training and career progression, compensation and benefits, sustainability awareness, and proactive management of the diverse workforce. UMD earned four out of five stars in the list released last month.

“I am proud to work alongside talented and dedicated employees who demonstrate their Terrapin pride on a daily basis,” said UMD President Darryll J. Pines. “At Maryland, we are committed—as our very own strategic plan states—to investing in people and communities. This distinction drives us to continue our enduring work to create a culture of care, inclusivity and professional advancement.”
