Forbes Names UMD Among America’s Best Large Employers

By Maryland Today Staff

Forbes has named the University of Maryland one of America’s Best Large Employers for 2025, according to new rankings released last week.

UMD ranks No. 1 in Maryland, No. 3 among public universities and No. 8 overall for education, and stands in the top 10% of all organizations with at least 5,000 employees, placing 59th out of over 700, and it is the second consecutive year that UMD has received this recognition.

The annual ranking, produced in partnership with market research firm Statista, is based primarily on survey responses from more than 217,000 employees working at companies in the U.S. that employ more than 1,000 people. (Companies with 1,000 to 5,000 employees were deemed midsize.) It focuses on factors like compensation, benefits, work-life balance and the overall company culture.

In a recent UMD survey, faculty and staff gave high marks for their workplace experiences, in particular staff feeling supported by their supervisors in managing work-life balance and faculty feeling valued for their teaching, research and service.

The university has made numerous investments in faculty and staff over the past several years, including introducing a new awards and recognition program for staff in 2024 and launching a series of supervisor professional development programs earlier this year. New faculty-focused initiatives include training and professional development for academic leadership, and policy revisions related to faculty evaluation and workload policies.

Newsweek also honored UMD this year as one of America's Most Admired Workplaces.
