Forbes Names UMD Among America’s Best Employers by State 5 Years In A Row

Forbes has named the University of Maryland one of America’s Best Employers by State for 2025, according to new rankings released on Friday.

In the fifth consecutive year that UMD has received this recognition, UMD placed No. 4 in Maryland out of 70 companies.

“At the University of Maryland, our greatest strength is our people. This recognition from Forbes affirms our commitment to investing in our employees and fostering a workplace where innovation, collaboration and community can thrive,” said Rythee Lambert-Jones, assistant vice president and chief human resources officer.

The annual ranking, produced in partnership with market research firm Statista, is based primarily on survey responses from more than 160,000 employees working at companies in the U.S. that employ at least 500 people. The survey focused on criteria including wage parity, work culture, paths to professional advancement, and whether the employer takes action on serious issues.

The university has made numerous investments in faculty and staff over the past several years, including introducing a new awards and recognition program for staff and launching a series of supervisor professional development programs. New faculty-focused initiatives include training and professional development for academic leadership, and policy revisions related to faculty evaluation and workload policies.

Earlier this year, Forbes also honored UMD as one of America’s Best Large Employers.
