Terps are professing their love this week: not to the cutie in statistics, but to the statistics themselves.
The data they seek will be pictured on postcards as part of “Dear Data,” a crowdsourced gallery of creative visualizations of the different types of data that students, faculty and staff encounter daily. It’s just one of several activities and events at UMD this week to celebrate International Love Data Week.
Hosted annually since 2016 during the week of Valentine’s Day, International Love Data Week celebrates all things data through online competitions, activities and events, as well as in-person events at organizations, government agencies, corporations and institutions. This is the second year that the University of Maryland has participated, joining other Big Ten Conference schools to host events and talks around this year’s theme, “My Kind of Data.”
This year’s Love Data Week events and activities at UMD include:
Lectures, workshops and talks (all week): Join UMD data experts to explore topics like GIS, Python and NVivo, data ethics, careers in data, on-campus summer experiences available to students and more.
Dear Data (Monday–Wednesday): How do you experience data? Students, faculty and staff can jot it down in words, illustrations or through data visualizations on postcards available through Wednesday at Edward Saint John Teaching and Learning Center, the STAMP and Hornbake Library.
Data Open House (Wednesday): From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., pick up a treat and peruse a gallery of completed “Dear Data” postcards; data-themed games and activities will also be on hand in the Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center Atrium.
Vote UMD (all week): Two UMD teams are going head-to-head against other Big Ten schools in the inaugural Data Viz Championship, which challenged teams to creatively visualize a variety of datasets. Cast your vote by Friday.
Details on Love Data Week events hosted by Big Ten Academic Alliance (and featuring UMD faculty) are available at btaa.org/research/love-data-week/program.
